This study will provide some basic information of Christian formation and gavie a taste of one key practice each week helping participants to become more comfortable with the language of spirituality. The group will meet: October 26 and November 2, 9, 6, 23 and 30 in Room 124 with Pastor Best leading.
There is a preparatory class for this group on October 12 to give people an introduction to the study and an idea of what to expect. A participants book ($10 each) will need to be ordered for each participant, so we ask peoople to sign up with Pastor Best or on the Narthex sign up sheet by October 5th.
Topics Class
This series of classes discusses topics ranging from Bible Study to Contemporary Issues with a variety of leaders from the congregation, staff and guest teachers. The following are the classes for the Fall season.
Sept 14 – Elijah – we will pick up our series of Old Testament figures with the prophet Elijah, the prophet we read about in I Kings and is mentioned in the New Testament as well. Elijah’s stories tell us something about the role of prophets, the nature of God, and the way God will act in our lives when we risk all and follow. Pastor Best will be leading this topic.
Sept 21 – Jacob is the next OT figure to look at more closely. Genesis affirms that God has been at work in the lives of Abram thru Jacob fulfilling the promise in Gen. 12:1-3 of land, family and blessings to the world. Jacob’s life ends with each aspect of the promise fulfilled and God’s grace shown. Join Pastor Best for this continuing series.
*September 28 – Tibet and the Olympics – The 2008 Summer Olympics are history but the issues between Tibet and China remain. This topic will give us an overview of the history between China and Tibet as we review actions at the Olympics and consider whether the Olympics are a place to raise human rights issues or other political issues. Randy Allen will be leading the discussion.
*October 5 - Gilead - This book discussion has also been carried over from the summer. Mary Ellen McAllister will lead this session. The “Seven pearls of wisdom” that the main character, Rev. John Ames leaves for his son young in the journal that he writes for him as a legacy knowing that he won’t be around to share in person will be part of the focus for the study leading us to ponder about the words of wisdom we might leave.
Oct 12 – Town Hall Meeting – This Sunday will be our quarterly gathering to discuss timely topics that face the congregation. The Communications committee is in charge of planning the meeting which will be moderated by Rev. Jim Richwine.
